Fall brings cooler days, colorful leaves and fun seasonal celebrations — including one filled with spooky vibes and sweet treats. For someone living with type 2 diabetes, it can feel a little scary, as navigating all the sugary temptations can bring uncertainty.
The good news? You don’t have to miss out on the fun. We’ve rounded up helpful tips to help you enjoy the festivities with confidence (and make this spooky season a little less frightening).
Planning for the festivities
Here’s a few things to consider as you plan ahead for celebrations, treats and social events.
- Treats can show up everywhere, even at work! Keep healthy high protein snacks on hand, on your desk, in your car, even a purse/bag to avoid the well-intentioned candy bowl.
- Plan for the events that matter to you. Before attending, think about what food may be available and what choices will help you enjoy the gathering while supporting your health goals.
- Share your goals. Loop in friends, family members, coworkers, or your coach for added support and accountability.
Eating at the gathering
Before attending a party or holiday gathering don’t skip meals to “save room” for the big event. This can lead to overeating and blood glucose spikes.
If possible, bring a dish you enjoy that also supports your individual nutrition goals.
Use the plate method when filling your plate:

1/2 plate non-starchy vegetables
1/4 plate lean protein (turkey, chicken, fish)
1/4 plate carbohydrates (potatoes, stuffing, rolls, etc.)
Pay attention to portion sizes, particularly for desserts, breads and other carbohydrate-heavy foods, and remember to stay hydrated. (If you drink alcohol, talk with your health care provider about what is appropriate for you, particularly if you take medication that can affect your glucose levels.)
Trick or treat with balance
Remember that holiday gatherings are about connection, traditions and spending quality time with friends and family.
And be sure to keep these tips in mind:
- Everything in moderation. You don’t necessarily have to avoid treats completely. Choose one or two of your favorite seasonal treats and enjoy a small portion mindfully.
- Stay active! Join the trick-or-treaters for a walk around the neighborhood. Even a short walk after a meal can support blood glucose management and aid digestion.
- Give yourself grace and reach out for support from your Level2 coach when you need it.
As you prepare for upcoming plans, don’t forget this season is all about savoring the moment and having fun!
