At Level2, we are committed to providing you with the best possible support for your health journey. As part of this commitment, we will begin collecting weight data more frequently. Monitoring weight helps the Level2 Care Team understand and better support your overall health. We can track progress, celebrate your wins and identify weight trends to help with long-term goal setting.
Following guidance from the American Diabetes Association (ADA), your care team will request permission to collect your weight approximately once a month. Providing this information will help us support you and other members better.
We understand that weight is a personal topic, and we want to explain why this information is important and how it will be used to support your health goals.
Why is Weight Tracking Important?
- Comprehensive Health Monitoring: Tracking weight helps us understand your overall health.
- Support for Health Goals: Sharing your weight allows us to better support your health goals, track progress, and celebrate achievements.
- Long-term Health Planning: Understanding weight trends is crucial for long-term health planning and optimizing diabetes medication.
- Health Benefits: Benefits of weight tracking include potential for improved blood sugar levels, reduced need for medication, improved mood and energy, and reduced risk of complications.1
The American Diabetes Association (ADA) has recommended that weight management be a primary treatment goal along with glycemic management.2 This health metric is among several health metrics we can use for goal setting and tracking.
According to the ADA, regular weight monitoring can help in making informed decisions about diet and lifestyle changes.1
The ADA emphasizes that even modest weight loss can significantly improve glycemic control and reduce the need for glucose-lowering medications.1
Weight loss can lower high blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease, and improve overall health.2, 3 For people living with type 2, these benefits are particularly important as they can lead to better long-term health outcomes and potentially reduce the severity of diabetes-related complications.3
A 5% weight loss is considered clinically significant, meaning it represents a meaningful amount of weight loss that can lead to positive health benefits like improved cardiovascular risk factors and better metabolic health.4
We know weight is a personal topic and we want you to feel as supported as possible. Don’t worry about answering any questions you aren’t comfortable answering.
You can also track your weight independently if you prefer. We use a weight-inclusive coaching model. Your comfort and trust are one of our top priorities!
Perspective from our clinicians
From a clinical standpoint, weight tracking is essential for managing type 2 diabetes:
- American Diabetes Association (ADA) Guidelines: According to the ADA’s 2024 Standards of Care in Diabetes, weight management should be a primary treatment along with glycemic management. Regular weight monitoring helps in making informed decisions about diet and lifestyle changes, which are essential for effective diabetes management.2
- Health Indicators: Rapid changes in weight can indicate health issues, and unexplained weight loss with high blood sugar can signal more serious conditions.5
- Medication Adjustment: Weight monitoring is necessary for adjusting diabetes medications.
Perspective from our coaches
For our coaches, weight tracking helps in:
- Lifestyle Changes: Viewing weight trends can indicate success with lifestyle changes.
- Goal Check-ins: Understanding weight change over time helps with goal check-ins and progress tracking.
Our Approach
We want to emphasize that weight is just one of many health metrics we use for goal setting and tracking progress. We follow a weight-inclusive coaching model and your comfort and trust are our priorities.
- Permission-Based: We will always request your permission to record weight. If you are not comfortable sharing, we will respect your wishes.
- Weight-Neutral Approach: We focus on a weight-neutral approach, aligning with the Healthy at Every Size movement. We acknowledge that weight stigma can lead to body shame and guilt, and we aim to avoid that at all costs.
- Holistic Health Focus: Our program is not solely focused on weight loss. We recognize that small wins and changes over time result in significant health outcomes. We look beyond weight, considering factors such as behavior change, decreased blood sugar levels, etc.
Together, we can achieve better health outcomes and support each other on this journey.
